November 2008

Thanks to the flood and 10 feet of water, 2008 was a tough year for us here at Heartscape Studios.  The good news is...the studio stayed dry and we're back in our wonderful space!  Thank you so much  to the 2009 Seniors I photographed!  You were so gracious in working with me and meeting me at all kinds of places.  Many of you opened your homes and alowed me to meet with you there.  A huge THANKS to my best friend Ann at Illusions Fine Portraiture for allowing me to use her studio to do my indoor photography.

Please allow me share a little story with you...

[July 2006]
Randina and her mom Donna Jo approached me to sponsor her in the National American Miss Pageant.  My contribution would be images she would enter into "Most Photogenic" portion of the competition.  Although, I had never met Randina prior to this, I soon found myself excited at the opportunity to photograph this spirited young woman whose personality oozed with every change in her expression.  We decided our goal would be to create portraits she could use both to enter in the pageant, and for her senior portraits.  In a whirlwind, one day session we created an awesome series of portraits.  This was Randina's first time entering a pageant, so with the help of a friend experienced with pageants we selected four of the best images.   I sent them to my lab for printing, delivered them to Randina, and off to the pageant she went...

So now it's Sunday evening, I'm at home with my family, and I'd left the the past weeks events at the studio when I left on Friday.  I'm guessing it was about 7:30 PM when my cell phone rang.  I looked at the number, and although it looked familiar, I thought to myself. "I wonder who this is?"  When I answered the phone I immediately recognized Donna Jo's voice on the other end, "Michael, Randina won FIRST PLACE Photogenic!"
Suddenly I remembered... I had told Donna Jo to be sure to let me know how Randina did.  I was thrilled to hear she had won.  Now at this point I'm thinking they're back home.  But no, she tells me they're still in Des Moines and they had just gotten the results about 30 minutes ago.  I can't tell you what a thrill and how honored I was that she thought enough to call me.  (I didn't ask, but I'm guessing she called Grandma first :-).  Imagine that... how humbling, that instead of calling after they got home, she thought enough to call me nearly the moment Randina won.  Thanks, Donna Jo!

Here are some images Donna Joe sent me from the pageant.
